Does melasma affect men too?

A close-up shows brown melasma patches across the cheek of a man with a light beard.

Put to a salesperson, the question is: is melasma a women's problem, and should a man be asking at all? The published wording is a comparison, not a rule.

What www.aad.org says

www.aad.org says: "Melasma is much more common in women than men."

Reading it literally

The sentence compares how common melasma is in two groups. It does not say men are exempt, and it gives no figure for either group. A pitch in Ann Arbor that treats melasma as something only women get goes further than the sentence does.

Before you rely on a promise

Ask for any statement about who gets melasma, or who is treated, in writing, along with the page it came from. Three pages to read beside it are the melasma causes page at www.aad.org, Harvard Health on skin care for aging skin and DermNet's topic page on melasma.
